How to book, step by step

  1. Register on SmartEX (JR Central) or JR-WEST Online Train Reservation. Both are in English. SmartEX needs a credit card when you register.
  2. At 10:00 Japan time, one month before your travel date, search for your train.
  3. Pick a train and a seat on the seat map. SmartEX books up to six people at once.
  4. Travelling with a large suitcase on the Tokaido, Sanyo or Kyushu Shinkansen? Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.
  5. Pay by credit card when you book.
  6. SmartEX: show the QR ticket on your phone at the ticket gate. There is nothing to collect.
  7. JR-WEST: before boarding, collect your ticket from a ticket machine with the credit card you paid with and your four-digit ID number.

FAQ

When do Shinkansen tickets go on sale?

Reserved seats go on sale at 10:00 Japan time, one month before the travel date (the same date in the previous month).

Can I book the Shinkansen from outside Japan?

Yes. SmartEX and JR-WEST Online Train Reservation both have English sites and accept overseas credit cards.

What if all reserved seats are gone?

Most trains have unreserved cars, though the Nozomi is all-reserved at the busiest holiday times. Seats also come back as other people change their plans, so keep checking.

How hard to get (“Usually still available”): Reasoning: on most days there are seats to spare; popular trains sell out at New Year, late March to early April, Golden Week and Obon (JR Central publishes separate advice for these peak periods).
