How to book, step by step

  1. Go to JR-EAST Train Reservation, JR East's English booking site.
  2. Using a JR East rail pass? Buy it on the same site first. Seats for the nationwide Japan Rail Pass are not reserved here.
  3. From 10:00 Japan time, one month before your travel date, choose your train and seat. You can book until 6 minutes before departure.
  4. Pay by credit card. If your card is declined, try another card or buy at a station.
  5. Before boarding, collect your tickets from a reserved-seat ticket machine at a JR East station, using the card you paid with. Allow extra time, as stations can be crowded.
